BC Hydro | Get up to $4,000 for Installing A Heat Pump
BC Hydro Is Offering Up to $4,000 Back When You Switch to a Heat Pump
If you’re still heating your home with electric baseboards or an old electric furnace, BC Hydro will pay you up to $4,000 to replace it with a high-efficiency heat pump. This isn’t a future program — the money is available now, but only while funding lasts. Here’s everything you need to know, and how to make sure you don’t leave a dollar on the table.
What BC Hydro Is Offering
BC Hydro’s Home Renovation Rebate Program offers two tiers of heat pump rebates for eligible BC homeowners:
- $4,000 for a whole-home heat pump that meets 100% of your home’s heating requirements at –5°C
- $1,500 for a partial-home heat pump that meets at least 50% of your home’s heating requirements
- Up to $2,000 bonus if you complete more than one eligible upgrade at the same time (e.g., combining a heat pump with insulation or other energy upgrades)
Beyond the rebate, heat pumps are significantly more efficient than electric resistance heating — so you’ll also see lower monthly energy bills long after the rebate cheque clears.
Who Qualifies
To receive the rebate, your installation must meet BC Hydro’s eligibility requirements:
- Your current primary heating system must be all-electric (electric baseboards, electric furnace, etc.)
- The heat pump must have a variable-speed compressor and meet minimum efficiency ratings (HSPF2 ≥ 8.5, SEER2 ≥ 15.2)
- The equipment must appear on BC Hydro’s rebate-eligible heat pump list and the NEEP Cold Climate list
- Homes over 1,200 sq. ft. must install a multi-split or central system
- The installation must be completed by a certified Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) member — self-installations and non-certified contractors are not eligible
That last point is critical. Most HVAC companies in the Lower Mainland are not HPCN-certified. If your contractor doesn’t hold this designation, your rebate application will be rejected — no matter how well the system was installed.
Why Most Homeowners Miss Out on Their Full Rebate
The rebate program has strict technical requirements beyond simply buying a qualifying heat pump. A proper heat load calculation (CSA F280-12) must be performed to correctly size the system, and the full report must be submitted with your application. Errors in sizing or documentation are the most common reasons rebate applications are denied or reduced.
This is where working with a certified, experienced contractor makes all the difference.
