BC Hydro | $2,250 For Condo & Apartment Heat Pump
BC Hydro Is Offering Condo and Apartment Owners Up to $1,000 Back on a Heat Pump Upgrade
If you own a condo or apartment unit in BC that’s heated by electricity, BC Hydro has a rebate program built specifically for you. Unlike the home renovation rebate program designed for detached houses, the Condo and Apartment Rebate Program covers individual suite upgrades in strata buildings, equity co-ops, and rental buildings — with rebates available for both heat pumps and heat pump water heaters.
What BC Hydro Is Offering
BC Hydro’s Condo and Apartment Rebate Program offers the following rebates for eligible unit owners:
- $1,000 for a single-head ductless mini-split heat pump
- $750 per head (up to a maximum of three heads, or $2,250) for a ductless multi-split heat pump system
- $1,000 for a heat pump water heater replacing an existing electric water heater
If you install both a heat pump and a heat pump water heater, you may be eligible to stack both rebates — helping offset a significant portion of your total upgrade cost. Lower energy bills from the increased efficiency of a heat pump add to the long-term value of the investment.
Who This Program Is For
This program is specifically designed for condo and apartment unit owners, not detached homeowners. To qualify, your situation must meet the following conditions:
- You own an individual unit in a strata condominium, equity co-op apartment building, or a multiplex with six or more units — or you own a purpose-built rental building and are upgrading a single unit
- Your unit is currently heated by electricity (e.g., electric baseboards, radiant ceiling or floor heating)
- You are the BC Hydro utility account holder, or you have a completed consent form from the account holder
- You are installing a heat pump, heat pump water heater, or both
- If you live in a strata building, your strata or equity co-op board must approve the upgrade before you request a pre-approval code from BC Hydro
Important: Pre-approval from BC Hydro is required before you purchase any equipment. Pre-approval codes are valid for six months. If you purchase a system before receiving your code, you will not be eligible for the rebate.
Income-Qualified? You May Get Even More
BC Hydro’s program is available to all eligible condo and apartment owners regardless of income. However, if you meet the income qualification criteria for the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program, that program offers rebates of up to $5,000 — significantly higher than the standard BC Hydro program. BC Hydro recommends applying for the CleanBC program first if you qualify.
Not sure which program applies to you? TEK Climate can assess your eligibility for both programs during your free in-home consultation, so you always walk away with the maximum rebate you’re entitled to.
Why the Contractor You Choose Matters
BC Hydro requires that all installations under this program be completed by a licensed contractor who meets specific installer requirements. Choosing the wrong contractor — even one who does a technically sound installation — can result in a rejected rebate application.
Beyond licensing, correct system sizing is critical. The heat pump must be sized and installed to maintain 21°C throughout the unit at an outside temperature of –5°C. If the system is undersized or incorrectly installed, it won’t pass BC Hydro’s requirements. This is exactly where an experienced, certified installer protects your investment.
